Our Inspiration - Where it all began:

On Friday the 1st of March 2013, we were lucky enough to experience Contemporary Learning in action at Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, High Gate. We thought we were going to learn about integrating one to one technology but, learnt much more.
When we first entered the Year 4 classroom we were shocked to see children rocking back and forth on their "stools" (not chairs)! After watching the teacher introduce the lesson (which provided ample opportunity for the children to use technology), we were offered a seat and encouraged to be participants in the lesson. From the moment our bottoms touched those stools... we were hooked for Hokki Stools!
After talking to the teacher and conducting our own research, this is what we have learnt about the use of Hokki Stools in the classroom as an alternative to chairs:
  • Good fidgeting! It is impossible for children to sit still on these stools because of their curved base. These curved bases removed the distraction of fidgeting as the children are required to subconsciously "wiggle" in order to stay on the stool. Not a single child in this class was off task - AMAZING!
  • Core strength: These stools are designed to promote core strength in children because of the constant movement of their core muscles.
  • Promotes correct posture: It is impossible to slouch on these stools, as you'll fall off. You automatically sit in an upright position.
  • Multifunctional: Children used the base of the stool as a desk as part of their contemporary classroom - more on that later!
  • Children love them! Isn't that enough?
Contemporary Learning:
Because we are still in the process of completely understanding the concept of Contemporary Learning, this definition is not definitive and we hope to keep you updated. At present we believe Contemporary Learning must:
  • Incorporate ICT when necessary.
  • Include modified furniture (hokki stools, bean bags, cushions, lounges). Children must be comfortable and not restricted to one environment.
  • As teachers we need to remember that we are modelling life long learning.
At this stage on our journey we were enthusiastic about getting to school and sharing our experience with our Principal and other staff members. We also couldn't wait to gradually introduce the concept of Contemporary Learning into our classes. (We started by Googling the price of Hokki Stools on the way home!)
